Blessings in a Backpack is an organization that addresses the problem of childhood hunger, providing meals for at-risk students. These students are eligible for free or reduced-fee lunches during the school week, but do not receive sufficient nutrition on the weekends. Because of this, they come to school tired and hungry on Mondays. To combat this issue, Blessings in a Backpack provides students with backpacks that contain six meals, ensuring that they will not go hungry over the weekend. The backpacks are returned each Monday, ready to be filled up again and sent home the following weekend.
Blessings in a Backpack currently serves at-risk students at Garfield Elementary, with plans to add two more elementaries this school year. All proceeds from Bowling for Backpacks and other Livonia fundraisers remain in the LPS community and support the students in the district.
