A special Arbor Day celebration took root April 24 at Garfield. Students showed off their tree-themed artwork, sang songs, planted three new trees and even staged a parade to celebrate the beauty, unity, diversity and goodness of trees.

Joined by members of the City of Livonia Tree Committee, Livonia Mayor Jack Kirksey and LPS administrators and other city leaders, the students first held a festive assembly before they paraded outdoors, around the school, and past the three new trees on the school grounds.

Principal Bill Green said trees are much like people, in that they bring unity, represent diversity with all of the different types and they grow strong roots.

Each student at Garfield received a tree to take home to plant. The Tree Committee also gave all LPS fourth grade students a sapling to plant.
